Let's get small(er)! GoPro seems to want to outstrip all the POV (point-of-view) cameras on the market with features that none others have, but maybe aren't needed by any of us.
GoPro has just introduced the Hero3 model, a significant upgrade from the Hero2 version that many of us are using.
This newest model is said to be 30% smaller, 25% lighter, and have a better lens than the Hero2. Another astonishing capability for one Hero 3 version is the ability to record "4K" video (4000 pixels wide vs the 1920 pixels of ATSC-standard HD video) and also "2.7K" video. Of course it will also record the usual 1920x1080P video that the Hero2 will do.
Additionally, the Hero3 comes in three editions: White, Silver, and Black, with progressively higher capabilities and prices. List prices start at $199.99 for the White edition and increase to $399.99 for the Black edition. Only the Black edition has the 4K and 2.7K video record modes. All three models have built-in Wi-Fi with the Black edition including a Wi-Fi remote.
Why would most of us need 4K or 2.7K video? We wouldn't. What I think GoPro is doing is positioning that model for the filmmaking industry which can use those resolutions. At their huge booth at NAB this year there were several areas at which they were bragging about their ties to the professional movie industry.
If you own a Hero2 should you upgrade? Probably not unless you really need the smaller size or Wi-Fi capability. I'm completely satisfied with my Hero2 and don't need any of the increased capabilities provided by the various Hero3 editions.
If I was looking for a POV camera for the first time or needed an additional one, I would look hard at the Hero3.
